The rise of Bangladesh origin Hamza Choudhury in English football

Hamza Choudhury, a 21-year-old Bangladesh origin footballer, has come out in style in the English Premier League.


He started to show his football magic with his brilliant performance in the last two victories of Leicester City against Chelsea and Manchester City.


Though Leicester City boss Claude Puel has recently suggested academy graduate that Hamza Choudhury would go out on loan in January.


But there is little chance of that happening now as the Bangladesh young emerged as a rising star in English Premier League with brilliant performance.


He played an important role to change the fate of Leicester City in the last two Premier League matches and his introduction to the team has coincided with victories over Chelsea and Manchester City.

For the first time, Hamza got a chance to be included himself in the first eleven of Leicester City for the season. He showed excellent performance in the last two matches to cement the position in the team.

Who is Hamza Choudhury?


Hamza Choudhury was born in Loughborough of United Kingdom (UK) on October 1, 1997. He is of mixed Caribbean and Bangladeshi descent. His mother is from Habiganj in Bangladesh while father is from Grenada.


He joined Leicester’s academy when he was seven. He has been a regular at matches ever since, first as a fan and now as the latest young prospect to make the step up to the senior ranks.

Now it is Hamza who became the first player of Bangladeshi descent to play in the Premier League.


Hamza made his debut in last November (2017) as a late substitute in a 2-1 win over Spurs. Before that he enjoyed two loan spells at Burton Albion, helping them to promotion from League One in 2016.


The father of a baby girl Hamza is seen a pioneer for players of Asian background, but he recently said, ‘I don’t really feel any pressure about being a professional from an Asian background. My family have been a great help with that, just telling me to enjoy it. If I turned around tomorrow and said I didn’t want to play football any more they would support me.’

Hamza is now in relationship with Olivia who is an interior designer. The pair, who live in Aylestone, have a baby girl.

Though he is bearing blood of a Caribbean national, his current dad is also from Bangladesh.


According to one of his cousins who lives in Bangladesh said that Hamza’s mother Rafia Dewan Chowdhury firstly tied the knot with the Caribbean. Later, she married her relative Dewan Murshid Chowdhury after she got divorced. Since Hamza is staying with his mother Rafia.

His current dad is Dewan Murshid Chowdhury hailed from Dewanbari of Snanghat village under Bahubal upazila of Habiganj.


Sources said Hamza visits Bangladesh as his mother stays at their Habiganj home for almost two months every year.

What is behind the sudden rise of Hamza?

His start at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (December 22, 2018) was his first league appearance of the season after impressing as captain for the club’s Under 23s. It came with Puel under pressure amid reports that his job was on the line.


The French boss responded by switching to a 4-5-1 formation with rookie Choudhury in the centre of midfield alongside Wilfred Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy and it was that trio who provided the backbone for a 1-0 win.
